Risk Calculator

Calculate position sizes for Futures, Forex, Crypto, and Stocks

The Risk Calculator is a built-in tool accessible from the Journal's Mini Dashboard. It helps you determine the correct position size for any trade based on your risk settings, entry price, and stop loss level. It supports four asset classes, each with its own calculation formula.

Accessing the Calculator

Open the Risk Calculator from the Journal: click the calculator icon in the Mini Dashboard or the calculator button in the journal header. A floating panel appears with four tabs for different asset classes, and it can also be docked as a tab of the TradeLog Tools side panel.

Futures Tab

For futures contracts, select your contract from the searchable list and enter your stop-loss distance in ticks -- tick size and tick value are filled in automatically from the built-in contract registry. The calculator determines how many contracts you can trade within your risk amount.

  • Formula: Contracts = Risk Amount / (Distance in Ticks x Tick Value)
  • Supports all major futures: ES, NQ, YM, CL, GC, and more
  • Automatically fills tick size and value for recognized symbols

Forex Tab

For forex pairs, select the pair and enter your stop-loss distance in pips -- the pip value is calculated automatically from the pair definition and live exchange rates. The calculator determines the appropriate lot size.

  • Formula: Lot Size = Risk Amount / (Pip Distance x Pip Value)
  • Supports major, minor, and exotic pairs
  • Adjusts for different pip values per pair

Crypto and Stocks Tabs

Crypto and stocks use similar percentage-based calculations. Enter the entry price and stop loss price, and the calculator determines the maximum position size (in units or coins) within your risk budget.

  1. 1Select the asset class tab (Futures, Forex, Crypto, or Stocks).
  2. 2Your risk amount is auto-filled from your account settings.
  3. 3Enter the stop-loss distance (Futures: ticks, Forex: pips) or the entry and stop-loss prices (Crypto, Stocks).
  4. 4The calculator instantly shows your maximum position size.
  5. 5Click the risk amount at the top to temporarily override it with a custom amount.
The calculator uses your account's current risk settings (mode and percentage). If you want to calculate for a different risk amount, you can temporarily override the value in the calculator without changing your account settings.
The calculator provides a mathematical position size based on your inputs. Always verify the result against your broker's margin requirements and position size limits before placing the trade.
